Car Restoration – Is It Worth It?

Many car enthusiasts find great joy in restoring old cars. It can be a very fulfilling hobby to see a car from the past restored to its former glory. The rewards aren’t limited to one’s sense of accomplishment either. There are plenty of automobile buffs who would pay a pretty penny for these restored vintage cars. Wouldn’t you like to explore the absorbing details of car restoration?

If your grandparent has an old automobile that has been sitting in the garage for years, you can stop dreaming about buying your own vintage model and start turning that dream into a reality. Therein lies the alternative; you can simply restore what’s already there. You’ll need some things first: your granparent’s approval, money, know-how (supplemented by research skills), help, lots of time, and tools. When you have all these ready, you can proceed to restoring your grandparent’s old car.

Car restoration requires quite a bit of effort and time. The process can take a while, especially if you are restoring a very old car. Since it can take a while before this process is completed, restoring a car can also take quite a bit of money.

If you are new at restoring a car, it is recommended that you start with cars that can be easier to refurbish such as Fords. If possible, seek the assistance of someone who’s restored cars before. Make sure that you have enough money on hand to get through the project. Otherwise, be prepared for the process to take years to finish. Very importantly, you must dedicate yourself to finishing the task. Since car restoration can take a while, it’s possible that at some point you’ll feel too tired to go on. Early on, ask yourself if you can endure the task. Once you’ve ensured that you’re in for the project, it’s time to set up your car restoration shop.

You’ll need to gather the materials and tools for your project. Place them in a box or container where they are easily accessible. Some of the things you’ll need are cardboard boxes, a camera, and labels. The camera will be used for documenting the entire process. It’s advisable that you take photos of each and every part that you take off the car so that you’ll know how it appeared before. You can also list items you replace and repair, placing them in easy to locate containers. Organization is a key part of the process.

After removing parts that need to be replaced or repaired, you can proceed to cleaning the car. This process removes all the dirt and rust that the automobile has acquired over time. The amount of dirt and rust your grandparent’s car has depends on how long it stayed unused. It also depends on how it was stored. Prepare your steel brush, sandpaper, wipe cloths, and other cleaning items. Some car restorers advise dipping the car in acid to better remove dirt, dust, and other materials.

Once you’ve taken off the parts of the car and it’s stripped down to its bare form, you can now see the degree of damage it has acquired through time. Everything will be visible once the car is in its bare form: dents, holes, etc. Mark those damaged parts for repair. You can now proceed to fixing repairable parts, and attaching them back to the car. This could take a while since you have to make sure that these pieces are well repaired and put back together correctly.

When you’re done with fixing and replacing parts of the car, and it is assembled, you’re close to the end of the project. The car body is ready for sanding. Ask around for the best grades of sandpaper for your particular car. Once you’re through with sanding and also painting, the car restoration is finished. Make sure that all necessary paperwork is taken car of so that the car is registered, and you’re ready for a leisurely drive.
